The social organization of the Santhal tribe

This thesis deals with the social order of the Santhal tribe with the focus on the location of this tribe, clannish framework, hierarchy within the tribe and, especially on the concept of marriage. The aim of the thesis is to define the tribe and to give readers a general perspective on Santhal way of interaction between a man and a woman. It pursues the development of their life together. The first part of the thesis focuses on the description of the tribe and on the general social hierarchy between the members of a Santhal village. It is followed by a wedding ceremony and matrimonial roles of a man and a woman. The thesis also explores taboos of Santhal marriage and the last part describes the eventuality of divorce.
